Known affectionately to his fans as "Scottso," "The Godfather," or "The Professor," Muni was born Donald Allen Munoz in Wichita, Kansas, and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began his career in radio while enlisted in the Marines, and replaced Alan Freed in Akron, Ohio, after leaving the service. He came to New York in 1959, and started on WNEW in the 1970s. While on WNEW, he became famous for his legendary stunts, such as playing poker on the air with the Grateful Dead, and greeting Elton John in a red dress. He became friendly with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and became a personal friend of John Lennon when his daughter was born at the same hospital where Lennon's son Sean was born. After Lennon's murder in 1980, Muni would begin his shows with a Beatles song. |
