The Morris Canal used to connect the upper part of Newark Bay, where the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers converge, with New York Harbor. This shortened the trip that the goods produced in the mills on those rivers had to make to reach the NY Ports and distribution to their markets.

The Canal is no longer there, except for its exit into New York Harbor which is now a part of Liberty State Park. It offers views of Manhattan, such as this one taken on a rainy evening.

The South Cove off New York Harbor in Bayonne has been converted into a bird sanctuary. Several old piers have been left in place. They appear and disappear with the ebb and flow of the tides.

I love using my Singh-Ray Vari-ND filter. It allows me to use extremely long exposures which smooth out the highlights on the water into a smooth and silky surface. This removes the visual distraction that the small and choppy little wavelet create and allow the forms of the decaying wood to become the subject of the photo

The second in a series of experiments using long exposure times to impart a different look to a more mundane scene.

This was shot on an overcast day at f/16 using a Singh-Ray Vari-ND filter to extend the exposure to about 100 seconds. This gives the murky and dark harbor water the misty and abstract surface effect.

This is the first attempt in using long exposures to impart a more ethereal look to scenes found around my local NYC Harbor waterfront. These are inspired in part by the work of Joel Tjintjelaar and Cole Thompson. My application of their techniques has a long way to go, but one must start at #1

This photo was taken in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. It is a Memorial to September 11th. The two rows of pavers and flowers represent the two towers and the path is the view to where they once stood....
